African fly whisk with hand-carved handle

Tribal Art from Africa! Artistic Akan fly whisk. The fly whip or fly catcher , called Chasse Mouches in French, comes from the Ivory Coast. It was handmade there decades ago by the Baule people. The wooden handle is richly decorated and shows a face. The hair is real hair, mostly from a horse. The horse hair was attached to the wooden handle with fabric. In the past, these Chasse Mouches were used to protect dignitaries from flies. Today, the decorative fly whisks are beautiful decorative objects. The Baule fly whisks are several decades old and have corresponding signs of wear.
