White Bogolan with black pattern

Bogolan is a traditional West African fabric that is closely linked to Mali's culture. Its origin goes back to the Bambara ethnic group, where the word bogo means clay, mud and lan ‘to make’. Bogolan therefore means ‘made of clay’. In addition to their aesthetic and decorative function, these fabrics also have a protective function, depending on the pattern. The weaving and dyeing technique used to produce Bogolan fabrics is originally native to Mali, but is also used in Guinea and Burkina Faso. Traditionally, the men weave 10-15 cm wide and roughly structured cotton strips, which are then sewn together. The women are usually responsible for applying the colours and artistic patterns. The fabrics are dyed in several stages - mud and sap from leaves and/or tree bark are applied several times, which makes the process laborious and time-consuming. These highly decorative fabrics can be used in a variety of ways - as a plaid on a sofa or armchair, as a table runner or as a wall hanging. Simple and expressive, Bogolan makes a great accent in a modern minimalist ambience. Each fabric is handmade and unique.
