Old wooden Dogon pharmacy with turtles 

The Dogon people are mostly indigenous to Mali and are known for their craftsmanship. Artful carvings decorate masks, doors and the many wooden containers. This large box with a turtle motif is hand-carved from a single piece of wood and was once used to store medicinal products. The decorative sculpture stands on 3 legs and has 2 compartments closed by small shutters with a turtle motif. The turtle is the symbol of rain and fertility. The two doors can be opened in opposite directions. Single piece.
