Old Batak calendar or Porhalaan

The Batak are an indigenous people in the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The Porhalaan or Batak calendar is the traditional calendar of this people. It is a calculative solar calendar with an occasional leap month. Unlike ours, the calendar is not used to calculate time. It is also known as the magic calendar, as it distinguishes favorable 'lucky' days from unfavorable days  -the days that turn away from luck. Festivals and rituals are planned according to this calendar on the favorable days. The Batak year begins on the new moon in May, when the constellation Orion disappears in the west and the constellation Scorpio rises in the east. The monthly strips of the old calendar were made from bamboo and are attached to a piece of cattle bone. Unique piece.

This calendar sculpture comes from the personal collection of a globetrotter whose house we were invited to clear out. A whole house full of beautiful things - handicrafts and unique pieces from all over the world. Many of the beautiful unique pieces are made of wood, handcrafted and expressive. The collector had a great fondness for sculpture and handmade sculptures.
