Chekere with beautiful signs of use

A shékere or chekere is an Afro-American rattle that is originally native to West Africa. It has since become an integral part of Brazilian and Cuban music. The body of the schékere consists of a calabash - an emptied, hard and dry gourd. A net of seeds is woven around this body to produce the typical racial sounds. As the net is open at the bottom, this chekere probably comes from Central America. As the origin of these instruments lies in West Africa, we have categorised them under Africa - where the nets are typically closed at the bottom. The chekere is old and has signs of use. A unique piece.
