Beautiful hand-woven Baule fabric from West Africa

The Baule are an African people who live on the Ivory Coast between the Camoe and the Bandamarivers. They belong to the Akan group. Baule artisans follow a technique that dates back to the 10th century, using traditional hanging looms. First, the warp threads are dyed with natural dyes, mainly indigo. The artisans then lay them in length and create the desired ikat pattern. The weft thread is woven in a single colour. Bands of approx. 10 cm in width are woven. The final fabric consists of 9 to 11 narrow bands that are sewn together. The fabrics made in this way are often decorated with small hand-made embroideries. There are fringes at both ends of the fabrics. Each of these fabrics is unique.

These fabrics are old and used and may have minor irregularities.
