Handmade old Hausa terracotta amphora

Beautiful old terracotta amphora from Niger. The large clay vase was hand-potted by the Hausa people. The Hausa are an ethnic group that is indigenous to large parts of North, West and Central Africa. The main areas of settlement are in Nigeria and Niger - in Niger, the Hausa make up half of the population. Pottery is still an important craft among the Hausa. The special feature of the beautiful Hausa terracotta pots is that they are fired at low temperatures. This maintains a certain porosity and ensures evaporation on the surface. Food is thus cooled and the clay pots are much less susceptible to major temperature fluctuations. They can also be used as cookware, as can be seen from the soot stains. The beautifully shaped amphorae are often painted by hand after the firing process. The colors are made from natural pigments. Many of the old amphorae have several layers of paint. If the paint flakes off, the clay vases are repainted. The beautiful large terracotta vase is a great decorative object. The amphora is old and has been used and has some signs of wear. The Hausa amphora stands on a metal ring. One of a kind!
